How Ad Group Signals Work with Scale Optimizer

Article summary

Ad Group Signals and Scale Optimizer

Ad Group Signals control when and where optimization recommendations appear in Scale Optimizer.

The Role of Signals in Recommendations

Scale Optimizer uses Ad Group Signals to decide which ad groups should see each recommendation.

Suppose there’s a recommendation to adjust bids for exact-match keyword ad groups.

Ad Group Signals make sure this recommendation appears only for ad groups that use exact-match keywords. Ad groups with other setups never see it.

As a result, you get recommendations that are immediately relevant. No filtering, no second-guessing, just clear actions to take.

How Signals Are Applied

Signals are assigned at the recommendation level inside Scale Optimizer.

To attach signals:

  1. Go to Scale Optimizer > Manage tab
  2. Create a new recommendation or edit an existing one
  3. Add the relevant SP, SB, or SD signals
  4. Save

Editing Ad Group Signal within Scale Optimiser’s settings page.

Each recommendation can include:

  • Sponsored Products (SP) Signals
  • Sponsored Brands (SB) Signals
  • Sponsored Display (SD) Signals
  • Only matching ad groups will qualify.

Guardrails

Signals are always evaluated within the same ad type:

  • Sponsored Product (SP) Signals apply only to ad groups within SP campaigns.
  • Sponsored Brand (SB) Signals apply only to ad groups within SB campaigns.
  • Sponsored Display (SD) Signals apply only to ad groups within SD campaigns.

Example:

A ranking optimization recommendation may appear only for ad groups that:

  • Are keyword-targeted
  • Use exact match keywords
  • Don’t use placement modifiers

If an ad group doesn’t meet all of these conditions, the recommendation won’t appear, ensuring you only see suggestions that truly apply.

In Summary

Ad Group Signals act as guardrails for Scale Optimizer, making sure the right recommendations appear for the right ad groups, every time.

The result is automation that’s smarter, safer, and easier to trust.
